Yet more misfortune denied McLaren GT4 rising star James Dorlin of a maiden victory in the British GT Championship at Donington Park.

The BRDC Rising Star and team-mate Josh Smith put in a superb qualifying performance to put the Tolman Motorsport-run McLaren 570S on the front row in second and led after the opening exchanges of the race after an excellent start from Smith and a move into Redgate.

Despite building up a comfortable margin over the next three quarters of an hour, Smith would never have the opportunity to hand over the reins to Vantage Motor Group and Prototype Creative-backed racer Dorlin.

One of the GT3 field heading through the Esses near the end of the first stint ruled the #4 out of the race, sending Smith through the gravel and back to the pit lane with a broken front-left suspension.

The incident means Dorlin and Smith leave Leicestershire in eighth overall in the standings, with Tolman Motorsport third in the Teams’ category.

The British GT Championship heads next to the iconic Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, over the weekend of 20^th-21^st July 2019.

James Dorlin said, “Again, another case of what could have been! We’ve had fantastic pace in the Tolman Motorsport McLaren 570S all weekend at Donington Park, and Josh [Smith] drove fantastically in the opening stint, first to take the lead and then to defend it.

“Obviously I’m disappointed to not even turn a wheel in anger during the race, but things happen so quickly in motorsport sometimes that incidents like today happen. It’s frustrating, and it’s probably the third race in a row now where we could feasibly have won and something’s taken that opportunity away, but all we can do is keep our heads up and keep pushing.

“Thanks to the whole team and everybody at McLaren for another positive weekend aside from the obvious – we’ll be looking to put that right next time out at Spa!”
