Four in a Row
...and the championship lead.
James turned in another superb display to claim victory in both Renault UK Clio Cup races at Thruxton, and in doing so comes away from the double-header in Hampshire atop the championship standings.
Strong pace during testing at the high-speed circuit last month translated into qualifying performance on Saturday, with Dorlin putting the #32 car on the front row of the grid for both races and narrowly missing out on a second consecutive pole position by 0.069 seconds.
Barnsley-based racer Dorlin would not be denied top spot in the opening race, however, fending off stern pressure from title rivals Max Coates and Daniel Rowbottom to score a fifth career victory in the highly-competitive single make category, and a third straight visit to the top step of the podium.
The nature of the victory - going wheel to wheel for the entirety of the 9-lap contest - made the champagne even sweeter, with Dorlin showcasing superb defensive abilities and a maturity beyond his years to hold the pair behind to the chequered flag.
With ITV4’s cameras rolling live across the nation’s homes for the second race, the Vantage Motor Group and GardX Protection-backed racer made a sublime getaway, relieving series stalwart Paul Rivett of the race lead into the quick right-hander at Allard.
He then tried - and succeeded - in stretching his advantage to prevent any slipstreaming from behind, and put in a superb defensive display to make it four consecutive victories.
BRDC Rising Star Dorlin came into the weekend having led the furthest distance and highest number of laps of anybody in the championships four races until that point, a fact now enhanced further by his weekends work.
The net result of both races is a 2 point advantage in the standings as the championship heads to Oulton Park in Cheshire over the weekend of 09-10 June - another of Dorlin’s favourite haunts.
James Dorlin (#32) said,“It’s been another perfect weekend. We knew we’d be strong here after testing and the aim was always to bring across our form from Donington Park a few weeks ago and translate that into more silverware here.
“It’s fantastic to be able to achieve it and I need to put a massive ‘thank you’ on record to everybody at Westbourne Motorsport for preparing the car to such a high standard, and to all my sponsors who make this entire programme happen.
“Getting four victories in a row is an amazing feeling, but now the focus needs to turn already towards Oulton Park. It’s a long season ahead, a lot can still happen yet, and we need to keep banking points whilst the momentum is on our side.
“It’s another of my favourite circuits and we’ve run well there before. The aim has to be fighting at the sharp end once again. We’re back on track in this title fight, now we have to stay there.”
