Dorlin takes long overdue maiden win at Brands Hatch
James Dorlin claimed a long overdue maiden victory in the British GT Championship at Brands Hatch (GP) last weekend [3rd-4thAugust], bringing an end to the McLaren GT4 racer’s recent run of bad luck.
Drama on the final lap at Spa-Francorchamps for Dorlin's team-mate Josh Smith denied the pair a deserved win behind the wheel of the #4 Tolman Motorsport-run McLaren 570S for a third consecutive race, but the Barnsley-based racer arrived back on domestic shores keen to bounce back.
From the second row of the grid, Dorlin’s team-mate Josh Smith moved up into the second, handing over to Vantage Motor Group and Prototype Creative-backed racer in the runner-up spot.
From there, Dorlin assumed the lead of the race and, despite a braking problem over the course of the final half-hour, managed the gap expertly to bring home a much-deserved first victory of the season.
That result technically means Dorlin and Smith remain in mathematical contention for the GT4 crown, with 37.5 points available at next month’s Donington Park finale and the pair currently 33 markers off the top of the table.
On a more realistic note, Dorlin insists ending his first season representing the famous McLaren brand with a top three overall finish, given the circumstances, would be a just reward.
The British GT Championship returns to action for the final time in 2019 back at Donington Park, Leicestershire, over the weekend of 14th-15th September.
James Dorlin (#4) said, “I’m really happy to finally get that breakthrough win. We’ve been on course to win so many races this year and something has gone wrong last-minute, so to now manage to actually take the victory is fantastic.
“A lot of credit has to go to the Tolman Motorsport guys, because after all that disappointment everyone stayed focused and now, we’ve got the reward for that.
“It’s great to see we’re still somehow mathematically in with a chance at the title, but more realistically a top three finish which, when you consider we’ve had almost 4 DNFs is pretty amazing, all things considered! Imagine if we didn’t have quite as much bad luck!
“Lastly, it was great to welcome my sponsors Prototype Creative to Brands Hatch at the weekend, and for them to see my maiden British GT victory was a really special moment – hopefully they all enjoyed the day as much as we enjoyed hosting them!”
